The Problem with Spiritual Overlay

--

The problem with spiritual overlay.

Demons and Deities. Human and Divine. Light and dark. We hold both within us.

The capacity for deep violence, brutality, for inflicting ghastly pain, for hurting each other; and, the ability to reach right in with our fleshy hands and fingers and feel the same blood red beating heart of a fellow living being and know with great tenderness that this pulse connects us all in love. In oneness.

Separation and connection.

Fear and Trust.

‘I’ versus ‘You’; and, ‘Us’.

It’s our time to hold both.

To nod towards the grand tipping scales of truth, justice, and freedom that comes from both eyes open to it all. From bearing it all. Both within and without. Lady Justice with her ever tipping, forever rebalancing, seesawing scales, in each the weighted meaty organs of humanity.

The problem with spiritual overlay is, although a balm in it’s original seed of intention, it’s sickly sweet. It vomits up twisted vacuous rainbows that evaporate into limpidness and pastel unicorns that shit candy in the corner of your noble garden.
And yet, and yet, it’s only this way when denial has been given charge to the whole damn fuckin thing!

Denial.

You see, as creatures of duality that hold all of the human flavours, both delicious and delightful, as well as bitter and sour, it’s not enough to float blissfully towards the light and not crawl, belly first, in the stank mud of the dark.
True spirituality includes both. True spirituality pretty much takes us to ground, bruised, battered, and broken, a bit like your own starring role in ‘Drag me to hell’. True spirituality is dirty and hurts. It breaks us and leaves us begging for mercy. Indeed, true spirituality, takes us to death. Ego death. And it ain’t fuckin pretty!

Now don’t get me wrong. I have sat and been pulled along by the choral current of kirtan and felt God rocking my bones to weeping ecstasy. I have danced sobered and silent and surrendered so that Spirit has used me as its instrument of divine rapture. And I’ve experienced the awe and true wonder of being. Being in a state of absolute oneness…
